The Victims of Sexual Assault<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • 1 woman out of 3 has been the victim of a sexual assault.<\/li>\n
  • 1 man out of 6 will be victim of a sexual assault during the course of his life.<\/li>\n
  • 83% of sexual assault victims are female.<\/li>\n
  • More than 75% of\u00a0native girls\u00a0<\/strong>under the age of 18 have been sexually assaulted.<\/li>\n
  • 40% of\u00a0physically handicapped women\u00a0<\/strong>will be victim of at least one sexual assault during the course of their lives.<\/li>\n
  • Women living with\u00a0disabilities\u00a0<\/strong>are two to three times more at risk of being sexually assaulted than women with no disabilities.<\/li>\n
  • 7 to 9 women out of 10 with an\u00a0intellectual disability\u00a0<\/strong>will be victim of at least one sexual assault during the course of their lives.<\/li>\n
  • 1 woman out of 7 has been sexually assaulted at least once by her spouse.<\/li>\n
  • Close to 8 victims out of 10 know the perpetrator.<\/li>\n
  • Up to 90% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.<\/li>\n
  • Reported sexual assaults against\u00a0people of 55 years of age and older\u00a0<\/strong>have increased since 2001.<\/li>\n
  • Victims of sexual assault come from all sorts of social and economical backgrounds.<\/li>\n
  • No matter what their age,\u00a0all women\u00a0<\/strong>can be sexually assaulted. On the other hand, women victims of discrimination in regards to their origin, sexual orientation or disability are more vulnerable to violence and abuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Perpetrators<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • In 98% of reported sexual assaults, the perpetrator is male.<\/li>\n
    • 20% of perpetrators are under the age of 18.<\/li>\n
    • In 2% of cases, the perpetrator is female.<\/li>\n
    • In 70% of cases, the perpetrator commits this crime in a private home (usually his own or the victim\u2019s).<\/li>\n
    • 50% of perpetrators are married men living with a woman.<\/li>\n
    • 95% of perpetrators have regular sexual intercourse with a consenting woman.<\/li>\n
    • The perpetrator is generally a\u00a0person of sound mind\u00a0<\/strong>who knows the victim and takes advantage of their\u00a0trust relationship\u00a0<\/strong>or his\u00a0position of authority\u00a0<\/strong>to sexually assault her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The perpetrator can be a family member, a friend, an acquaintance, a spouse, a professional, a co-worker, an employer, a teacher, a fellow student, a neighbour, a client, a patient or a stranger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
